MAGFest is a non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation of games and video game music, and the host of several annual convention events throughout the US.

For BurgQuest, MAGFest’s tabletop crew will be hosting their free play board game library on site. Hundreds of board games will be available for attendees to check out and play throughout the conference center.

TRIFORCE QUARTET

The Triforce Quartet is a traditional string quartet that plays video game music. The ensemble began innocently as a short Zelda medley for an encore of a recital in early 2007, but the video of using traditional string quartet instruments to play music of classic games gained viral popularity later that summer. The Triforce Quartet has played in front of sold out shows at PAX Prime in Seattle, PAX East in Boston, MAGFest in Washington DC, the iDIG Music Festival in Ireland, and with Video Games Live!

Goblins & Growlers

Goblins and Growlers has been organizing and running massive free-to-play public tabletop role playing events in breweries, restaurants, theaters, and conventions since its founding in 2018. They’re committed to building welcoming, inclusive spaces for both newcomers and veterans to enjoy this hobby and explore fantastic worlds which foster collaborative storytelling. Goblins and Growlers has provided professional tabletop role playing games, stage performances, and audience panels for conventions such as DragonCon, MAGFest, GalaxyCon, and Queen City Anime Con.

RICHMAHJ

Mahjong, a game dating back to 18th-century China, is more than just a pastime. It’s a mental exercise that reveals hidden potential and builds friendships across generations. Historically, it challenged gender stereotypes, empowering women to showcase their strategic skills, escape domestic roles, and gain financial independence. Inspired by her own Mahjong class, Sara founded RichMahj to bring this experience to Richmond, aiming to create a passionate community. Virginia, a second-generation Chinese-American based in Williamsburg, found a deep cultural connection through Mahjong.

Stop by the RichMahj Marketplace table on Saturday and Sunday to learn more about the history of Mahjong, how to play, or book a private group lesson!

  • Is BurgQuest your first tabletop con? Are you attending solo and looking to connect with others? In search of some secret con tips and tricks? First ever time in Williamsburg?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this weekend kickoff panel is for you. Join event organizers as they lay out a recommended schedule featuring can’t-miss programming, provide advice on how to best make new gaming friends, point you to additional adventures around Williamsburg, and set you up for success as an attendee of the first-ever BurgQuest.

  • This panel introduces the audience to the hobby of RPG and board game collecting. It explores different collection parameters and approaches to the theming of collections; concerns about collectability that are connected to the larger market, as well as aspects of collecting outside of monetary value and scarcity; resources and tips for getting deals on rare games; and suggestions for how the collecting hobby can change one's relationship to gaming more generally. Drawing from a variety of examples, including the speaker's 25 years of collecting, it provides a chance to talk collecting and collections, "grail" finds, and surprise discoveries.

  • What DND item do you think would let you win Monopoly the fastest? Which board game could you beat Tiamat at? This game show "panel" featuring anything from Pandemic to Pathfinder will have you passionately arguing to fellow convention-goers why your board game could definitely beat up Strahd.

  • Welcome to D&D 101! If you are a veteran player or relatively new to D&D, TTRPG's, or acronyms in general, grab your dice and roll for initiative as we engage in a panel discussion alongside audience Q&A's to talk about tips, tricks, pitfalls, advantages, and more on becoming a first time D&D player and/or Game Master!

  • Creating your very own board or card game feels like a daunting task. But, there's a helpful process that can set you down the path toward bringing your ideas to life! In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to seek inspiration, assemble useful prototyping material, and put iterative design to work in a game of your own!

  • An introduction to the basics of worldbuilding, including the nature of political power and the basics of conquest.

  • Whether you are a player looking to make your character stand out or a GM looking to spice up your NPCs… this workshop will help you create memorable characters for your next role-playing game. The crew from Pushing Dragons will show you some simple improv tricks that will make your characters unforgettable - no accents or funny voices needed.

  • Presented by Flagbearer Games

How can a tabletop roleplaying game teach about civics, American history, and the 18th century world? Join historian and educator Pat Mooney, creator of the "Nations & Cannons" TTRPG, as he discusses making epic games about Revolutions... and ways to tell your own stories by delving into local legends and the history in your home town!

  • In this workshop, participants will learn about the art of keeping games in balance in a way that allows complex systems to emerge from simple components. Following a fun balancing exercise, you can participate in the Asymmetrical Battle Game Jam where you will have the opportunity to work in small teams to create a 3-vs-1 card game.

  • Are you tired of players taking your carefully-written plots off the rails? Exasperated, watching carefully-curated encounters fall to pieces by guile, luck, or metagaming? Why not embrace the chaos, and randomly generate something wonderful?

In this workshop, you’ll learn the art of the random generation table from the examples of RPGs like Mörk Borg and Vaults of Vaarn (along with a few of the presenter’s own contributions). Having immersed yourself in oddities profound, you will then emerge to present the world with a storm of strange, a web of weird, a door to a thousand different worlds, opened by a set of dice: YOUR VERY OWN 3x10 RANDOM GENERATION TABLE!

  • Presented by Goblins & Growlers

  • Improv is the big buzz word lately in role playing games. But it's not just Yes And-ing every idea players through at the game master or coming up with a myriad of voices and accents for your NPCs. There are a lot of  improv concepts that can easily be applied to roleplaying games. Concepts like Making your partner look good, active listening, sharing the focus and more. This workshop will walk both players and game masters through some of the core concepts of improv and show how they can easily be applied to your next game.
